High West Distillery was founded in Park City, Utah in 2006 with a small 250-gallon still. Since then they have grown to be an internationally recognized brand. In 2016 High West was named "Distiller of the Year" by Whiskey Advocate, America's leading whiskey magazine.

In 2015 High West opened its Wanship distillery which utilizes a 1600-gallon copper pot still. With expanding stilling capacity High West needed to expand its milling capacity as well. The High West team selected a Stedman Cage Mill to fill that void.

Corn, barley and rye are fed from a room above to a chute that feeds the cage mill. Batch sizes vary but High West will commonly run 7,500 pounds per day. After the material is milled, it is discharged into a tubular drag conveyor where it is taken to a grain surge bin before use in the mash cooker.

The cage mill allows for efficient milling of the raw materials High West Distillery uses and offers superb longevity. It has been in use for three years and the pins in the mill are not showing any sign of wear. We anticipate that High West will be able to use the Stedman Cage Mill for decades to come.

Client Needs: Expand their long term milling capacity

Products Used: Stedman Cage Mill

Result: Reliable, low maintenance milling solution in place

“The Stedman Cage Mill has allowed High West Distillery to achieve daily grain milling targets with opportunity for further demand.  The variable control of the mill speed allows us to target varying grist sizes specific to our recipes and grain type further increasing our production efficiency and offering a level of customization not available through commercial grain mills and their vendors.  We are confident that our cage mill will  continue serve High West successfully for years to come.
