The Amalgamated Sugar Company has been processing sugar for well over a century. They produce over 2 Billion pounds each year. Sugar beets are transported in bulk to plants where they are processed into granulated sugar. In 2019 one of the Amalgamated Sugar plants expanded its operation and required high strength, food-grade magnets to ensure that no stray metal made its way through the process and into the final product loaded into rail cars. The finished sugar moves over the rail cars with a large screw conveyor that pushes the material over multiple hatches where it is dropped through the hatch into the awaiting rail car beneath. A drawer magnet was installed on each hatch so that all sugar making its way to the rail car is free from any metal debris.
